In the 1950s Taylor was the economic powerhouse of Williamson County. It was expected that the proposed Interstate 35 would pass through Taylor on its way from Dallas to Austin. Citizens and City Government of Taylor lobbied against the Taylor route due to the loss of farmland and the 300 feet wide right of way demand which was unheard of before this time. Interstate 35 route was moved to Round Rock which caused Round Rock to prosper. Round Rock has a population of just over 100,000 and located 15 minutes north of Austin. Major employers include Dell, Sears, Emerson and Texas Guaranteed Student Loan. Its property tax and utility rates are among the lowest in the region. It has an award-winning park system, school district and is one of the safest cities in the US. Round Rock is the one of the fastest growing cities in the nation, and one of the best-managed cities in Texas. The city has maintained high quality of life and is a major center for economic growth for Texas.
